Material Notes: AL 36 alloy is a nickel-iron alloy combining low thermal expansion properties up to about 200°C along with moderately high strength and good toughness down to -235°C, the temperature of liquid hydrogen. These properties combined with good weldability and desirable physical properties make this alloy attractive for many applications requiring precise dimensional stability. In applications such as LNG tankers and in transportation and storage vessels for liquefied gas, AL 36 alloy is of great advantage due to the minimization of any strains in the material resulting from thermal contraction. The composition of AL 36 alloy for cryogenic application is adjusted to achieve very low thermal expansion coefficient at low temperature. This alloy is also used extensively in the manufacture of bimetallic components for electrical and electronic industries.
