Biomer® L9000 PLLA Biodegradable Polymer
Subcategory: Thermoplastic
Material Notes: PLLA is a thermoplastic polyester of 2-hydroxy lactate (lactic acid). The formula of the subunit is: -[O-CH(CH3)- CO]-. PLLA is transparent and its surfaces are suitable for optical purposes. It is waterproof and can be processed as classic thermoplastics. The Biomer formulations Biomer® Lxxx (PLLA) are based on poly-L-lactic acid produced by polymerization of naturally occurring L-lactate. Chemically they are alpha hydroxyl esters. These are prone to hydrolyze (degrade). Hydrolysis is fast in humid conditions at temperatures above the glass transition temperature of 50 to 60°C (c.f. bio-degradation in composts). However hydrolysis also is seen at room temperature, although at very low rates.
