BioSpan® Segmented Polyurethane (SPU)
Subcategory: Elastomer, TS; Polyurethane, TS; Thermoset
Key Words: SPU; The Polymer Technology Group; Polyurethane; Elastomer
Material Notes: Used for many biomedical devices due to its flex-life, biostability, thromboresistance, and processability. Typical weight average MW is 180,000 daltons (ASTM D-3593). BioSpan segmented polyurethane (SPU) is one of a series of specialty polyurethanes offered by The Polymer Technology Group. This first generation elastomer is intended as a direct replacement for Ethicon's Biomer®. It is a sightly translucent, polyetherurethaneurea based on a polytetramethyleneoxide soft segment and an aromatic (essentially MDI-ED) hard segment. It contains a stabilizer package virtually identical to Biomer and a similar viscosity-versus-solids content curve (i.e. solution consistency) in dimethylacetamide (DMAC). The Polymer technology Group has established a master file for this polymer with the US FDA and is working with a number of industrial and academic research groups to provide a wide range of comparativetest results for inclusion in that master file. BioSpan is normally supplied in solution with DMAC but The Polymer Technology Group has facilities for GMP/cleanroom fabrication and can be supplied in configured form.
