Type P-VSB-32 (Union Carbide) Carbon Fibers
Subcategory: Carbon Fiber/Thermoset Composite
Key Words: composites, fibers
Material Notes: Pitch fibers are prepared by heating aromatic compounds above 350°C. A dehydrogenation condensation reaction occurs to form planar aromatic molecules which aggregate into a liquid crystalline phase (a mesophase). Once the mesophase content has reached about 40%, a phase inversion occurs and this anisotropic material becomes the continuous phase.
